Midas: Our Workhorse Evaporator System

Evaporator system

Midas is our workhorse evaporator system, dedicated to the preparation of Au/mica surfaces.  Our work requires the use of many Au substrates in each series of experiments, and we have found that evaporated Au/mica films provide a practical alternative to single-crystals.  In addition, the lateral dimensions can be arbitrarily large, thus facilitating infrared studies of weakly absorbing species.

Capabilities

  • Preparation of 10x (2.5cm x 7.5cm) Au surfaces per 48 hour cycle
  • Base pressure ~10-7 torr
  • Substrate heating to 300 oC during Au evaporation
  • All metal construction
  • Turbomolecular pumping plant
  • Dual W-boat evaporation sources
  • Mechanical shutter beam-block
  • Cold-cathode pressure measurements
