Midas: Our Workhorse Evaporator System
Midas is our workhorse evaporator system, dedicated to the preparation of Au/mica surfaces. Our work requires the use of many Au substrates in each series of experiments, and we have found that evaporated Au/mica films provide a practical alternative to single-crystals. In addition, the lateral dimensions can be arbitrarily large, thus facilitating infrared studies of weakly absorbing species.
Capabilities
- Preparation of 10x (2.5cm x 7.5cm) Au surfaces per 48 hour cycle
- Base pressure ~10-7 torr
- Substrate heating to 300 oC during Au evaporation
- All metal construction
- Turbomolecular pumping plant
- Dual W-boat evaporation sources
- Mechanical shutter beam-block
- Cold-cathode pressure measurements
